I’m not really sure how to begin this sordid tale of lies and betrayal, especially since I know it’s going to be a long one. Maybe with the question I’ve been asking myself for the last few days: what would you do if you suspected someone was lying to everyone they knew? We’re not talking little white lies, like “of course your bum looks good in that” or “yes dear, it was delicious”. We’re talking heavy-duty “I am not who you think I am” whoppers with the power to destroy the most important thing any of us have these days – a person’s online identity.
If you’re reading this, chances are you have one of those – an online persona that may or may not be the same as the one you present in real life. You might be more popular online than you are irl and you sure as hell connect more with these faceless people who share your interests than you do with your family and friends from school/work/life.
Maybe your personas overlap. Maybe they don’t. Maybe you start omitting details from some exchanges online, maybe you start embroidering others. Maybe you embroider until you’re pretending you’re in another country rubbing shoulders with the idols you love…but wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. I think introductions are in order.
